FEMSA Health joins the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to validate its emissions reduction goal by 2030

  • FEMSA Health is the first company in its industry in Latin America to validate its emissions reduction targets with the SBTi initiative for aligning with the 1.5°C scenario.
  • To achieve its SBTi objectives, FEMSA Health is implementing different actions such as; the electrification and energy efficiency of fleets, the replacement of fossil fuels and the use of renewable energies, as well as the implementation of zero waste based on circular economy principles.
  • FEMSA Health is adopting various projects and actions, including encouraging its suppliers of purchased goods and services and transportation and distribution to establish their own science-based emission reduction targets.

Mexico City, Mexico. March 5, 2024 – The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved the goals proposed by FEMSA Salud to establish short-term decarbonization goals for the entire company and from which they will be reducing absolute GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions in its three scopes.

The proposed goal states that:

  • FEMSA Health commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 45% by 2030 from a 2021 base year.
  • FEMSA Health also commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from goods and services purchased, transportation and distribution from suppliers, and waste generated in operations by 25% in the same timeframe.

Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature. (WWF) and one of the commitments of the We Mean Business Coalition, who through the SBTi define and promote best practices in science-based target setting, offering resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently evaluating and approving companies’ goals. www.sciencebasedtargets.org

Indeed, it focuses on accelerating companies around the world to halve emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. At the same time, it allows companies to set ambitious emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science.

«The formulation of GHG emission reduction goals in line with the SBTi methodology is a major endeavor in which all parts of the organization are participating, and it supports FEMSA Health’s commitment to a more sustainable operation and business, taking into It considers not just the implications of the business, but also those of our value chain,» highlighted Patricia Aguilera, Head of Sustainability at FEMSA Health.

Actions to achieve FEMSA Health‘s objectives

As far as FEMSA Health is concerned, projects and actions have been implemented, including: electrification of fleets (from fossil fuels to electric fleets); fleet energy efficiency; replacement of fossil fuels with low-carbon alternative fuels and substitution of refrigerants used in refrigeration equipment and air conditioners. In the same way, the use of renewable energies such as solar and wind energy has been launched; the implementation of energy efficiency initiatives with inverter equipment, LEDs, efficient lighting.

On the other hand, it will seek to encourage its suppliers of purchased goods and services and transport and distribution to establish their own emission reduction targets. In terms of operational waste, FEMSA Health will implement strategic zero-waste methodologies based on circular economy principles.

With the proposed goal and actions to achieve these objectives, FEMSA Salud reaffirms its commitment to create economic and social value, carrying out its business activities in a sustainable manner and achieving its SBTi objectives in the short term, considering our long-term goals focused on the pillars of FEMSA Health’s sustainability strategy.
